In a kidnapping, Pei Shaoting's mother was killed by the kidnappers. Qiao Wanwan was also severely injured while protecting Pei's mother, while Jiang Mian escaped unharmed but lost her memory and voice. After waking up, Qiao Wanwan identified Pei Shaoting's wife Jiang Mian as having conspired with the kidnappers to kill Pei's mother. Torn between love and hate, Pei Shaoting tormented Jiang Mian in every way. Pei Shaoting mistook Jiang Mian for pretending to be mute. In order to force Jiang Mian to speak, he nearly drowned her, and also used Pei's mother's portrait and Jiang Mian's father's life to provoke her, yet Jiang Mian still could not say a word. To save her injured father, Jiang Mian was forced to kneel, but was humiliated by Pei Shaoting.
